NOVA CITY SAGA

Since I'm planning to post various reviews of Super-hero RPG's here, I thought it might be useful to establish a baseline character, to show how a typical super looks in each system. To keep things fast and easy, I chose Protostar, a character I originally created for Heroes Unlimited, years ago. Protostar, AKA V'Lar V'Ral, is an alien from a distant world, whose planet was taken over in a violent coup engineered by the sinister Shardax Imperium. V'Lar was a member of the Protostars, a squad of elite warriors, sworn to uphold the law and protect the prince.  Exiled for his resistance against the false ruler installed by the coup, V'Lar is the last surviving Protostar. He has taken up residence on Earth, where he seeks to protect the inhabitants penance for his failure to protect his own home.  His powers include flight, damage resistance from his organic crystal body, and powerful "Star Blasts", bolts of known energy.  He is significantly stronger and ...

  I’m not going to bury the lead here… Four Color Studio’s Super Action Role-Play is the very definition of a hidden gem.  I don’t see a lot of people talking about this game, and that’s a shame in my opinion. Because I think it might be exactly the kind of game a lot of people are looking for. Quick, concise, fast character creation, simple but thorough rules… SAR ticks a lot of boxes. It combines elements of many different games (I felt strong Icons, Savage Worlds and FASERIP vibes), and presents them in an appealing new package, with down to earth writing, fun art, and plenty of examples. According to the introduction, SAR is actually a streamlining and simplification of another system, 3d6 Supers. Apparently both games are still in print, and one is not meant to replace the other.  The core mechanic is a 3d6 roll, plus stat, vs. a target number.
